Even amongst the uninitiated, John Deere is a well known brand name – famed for their agricultural machinery, tractors, and even lawn mowers.

The latter in particular has become a popular project for those with the money, time, and inclination, offering style and efficacy to those with a keen eye for gardening and an even finish to their yards.

But what kind of lawn mowers do John Deere make, and how can you get them started?

What Mowers Do John Deere Make?

As can probably be expected from a long time producer of agricultural equipment – namely tractors – John Deere produces a high end range of ride-on lawn mowers – perfect for those with large portions of land to mow, or indeed those in the commercial sector who have to mow things fairways, golf courses, and other sporting venues.

Despite being relatively simple to use, knowing how to do so is important – especially when you consider the dangerous potential that any large, bladed piece of equipment has.

As such, there are numerous steps you can take to ensure you are all good to go.

Pre-Start Checks

Before you even think about getting going, there are a few important pre-start checks that every mower owner should do to ensure safety, proper functionality, and efficiency.

These checks include checking the gas level, checking the oil level, and seeing if the blades are properly secured, sharp enough, and aligned properly.

You should also check that there is no debris, branches, or other obstructions within the blades before starting the engine.

Step One

Once these checks have been made, you can then put the key in the ignition. This is usually located to the right side of the steering wheel, but once it is inserted into the ignition switch, be sure to leave it off for the time being.

Step Two

Next push the brake pedal and unlock the mower’s parking brake. This can either be found on the right or left side of the mower, and after pushing it all the way down, you should keep your foot there while you do the next step.

With the brake pedal pushed all the way down, you then need to push the parking brake lever to allow for movement to occur. This lever is usually located beneath the ignition key.

Step Three

Next you will need to position the throttle lever, and this can be located to the left side of the steering wheel.

If the engine is cold, then you need to select the cold choke position on the lever, and if the engine is warm, then you can put it to the half speed position.

Step Four

Then comes the time to turn the key in the ignition. You should turn it to the on position and hold it there for 5 seconds, releasing it when the engine starts and begins to tick over.

If the engine does not start immediately, wait for a period of about ten seconds, before turning the key once more. Keep repeating this procedure until the engine finally fires up.

Be sure to only keep the key held in the on position for 5 seconds at a time, otherwise you could potentially cause damage to the engine starter.

Step Five

Once the engine has started, and is maintained, you should then allow the ignition key to return to its original position within the switch.

John Deere models will do this automatically, so simply release the key as soon as the engine starts ticking over and let it do all the work.

Are John Deere Mowers Expensive?

Unfortunately for some, John Deere mowers are some of the most expensive on the market, meaning that the decision to buy one really needs to be made carefully before any money changes hands.

Of course, there are many factors that contribute to the high cost of John Deere products – namely the high quality, the rugged durability, the high cost parts, and the need for expert servicing.

You are of course also paying for the name, which in the realm of agriculture and landscaping, is one of the leading brands in the world.

Are John Deere Mowers Worth It?

In terms of the ride-on mowers that are available on the market, you probably don’t need to be solely focused on a John Deere model – and in truth there are numerous notable, trustworthy brands that are available.

However, when we talk about quality, reliability, and sheer iconic style, you would do well to find a product that looks, feels, and handles as good as a John Deere.

Ultimately, the decision for whether to purchase one or not should come down to your financial situation, and whether or not you have the need for a piece of equipment of this nature.

If you have a modest garden, or if you live in a residential area, then chances are you do not need a ride-on mower. However, if you have a large plot of land that needs tending to, then one of these bad boys might be just up your alley!

Final Thoughts

And there we have it, everything you need to know about John Deere lawn mowers, and the best way to start them up.

It’s true that amongst gardening and agricultural machinery, John Deere is one of the leading names for quality and style – and has achieved something close to icon status for many.

However, for those who aren’t familiar with their products, starting the mower could be a difficult task indeed – luckily though, with this handy guide, you too can have it up and running in no time.

So if you have a John Deere mower, and you want it up and running, then be sure to give these methods a try. Something tells me you won’t be disappointed!
